I started doing work for the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit around the time that they opened in 2006. Maybe like many cultural institutions they have a tight budget, and at some point I became really interested in this idea of designing letterhead for them that was laser-printed on the back of old letterhead. One thing Detroit has a lot of is bankrupt businesses. And also departed businesses (i.e., businesses that moved out of the city). So I thought it would be great to collect old letterhead from these places and print MOCAD's letterhead on top. It would be a kind of adaptive re-use for letterhead. So I designed it, and showed it to MOCAD, and they were receptive and nice about it, the only problems were that (a) they already had really nice letterhead that worked well for them, (b) they were worried it would be confusing if they started sending stuff out on old letterhead from other businesses, (c) they hardly ever use letterhead in the first place because they mostly send emails and (d) it turned out that even though I had the idea I had a hard time locating letterhead for departed businesses, most of what I found was for businesses that still exist (like the Detroit Free Press or Pontiac) so it just seemed like it was stealing other people's old letterhead. Which might have been ok. But in the end we didn't use it. (2007)
